Located in the west of the island, Jurong East Regional Centre combined the former Jurong Lake District and Jurong Gateway into one commercial hub from its conception in 1991. Jurong Lakeside is the biggest waterfront commercial setting after Marina Bay, and is served by Jurong East, Chinese Garden and Lakeside MRT stations, with more planned when the Jurong Line is finished and the Downtown Line is completed. It also boasts significant retail facilities, which are due to become more upmarket as high end brands continue to move into the area. New malls are planned for coming years as well as Ng Teng Fong General and Jurong Community Hospitals.
Seletar Regional Centre
The latest regional centre to be announced is at Seletar, in the north-east of the island and in years to come could prove to be the most successful of all of them. It has the advantage that it has two major employment regions on its doorstep – the Seletar Aerospace Park, and Sengkang West Industrial Park. With global players Rolls-Royce, Eurocopter and ST Aerospace already based there, Seletar Aerospace Park is all ready for phase 3 of its development which will create up to another 10,000 jobs – the majority of which will be for highly skilled workers.
The area will also draw on its proximity to the many local parks and waterways, as well as its quickly improving communication networks, and many experts are predicting that the centre will grow to become twice as big as Tampines.
